The Commission was looking for comments on the three main sources of microplastics:
- tire abrasions;
- plastic pellet losses; and
- synthetic textiles.
EuMBC and EuPC have made their contribution to the call for evidence by providing brief insights into Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) – an industry wide effort to tackle pellet losses in the environment by promoting best practices and providing guidance and tools to support companies from the plastic value chain in the implementation of the necessary pellet loss prevention measures.
In 2020, the European Plastics Converters (EuPC) and PlasticsEurope committed to jointly develop an Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) EU certification scheme aimed at controlling and documenting compliance with requirements targeting minimization of pellet loss across the entire plastic supply chain.
The European Commission aims to collect adequate information to develop measures to combat the release of microplastics along with labelling, standardization & certifications.
The Commission expects to adopt the proposal on this initiative in the last quarter of 2022. Commission’s impact assessment following the call for evidence will be open for public consultation in Q1-2022.
